WHY
TEACH YOUR CHILD SIGN LANGUAGE? (For Babies 6 months - 5 years old.)
When born, infants have a desire to communicate their needs and wishes, but lack the ability
to do so clearly and can only express themselves through non-verbal cues such as crying, smiling, etc. This often leads to
frustration and tantrums, in children of all ages. Hand-eye coordination required for sign language is easier earlier on,
than the coordination of the lips, tongue, breath, and vocal chords simultaneously in the pattern of a huge vocabulary in
the parents language required for speech. By using simple signs for common words in the infant's enviornment, such as "eat,"
"drink," "dream," "sleep," "more," are a few examples of 50+ signs which you will
learn in the workshop. With Baby Sign Infants can learn to express their needs before they are humanly able to produce comprehensible
speech.
Baby sign became popular when studies showed that babies born into deaf families whether deaf or hearing,
immersed in a complete signing environment were able to use simple signs from as early as 6 weeks. It has been estimated that
90% of a baby's linguistic observations are observations of interactions between others, not interactions between self and
others. This means that babies will desire to use the communication form they are immersed in, and use of sign among other
family members is at least as important as use of sign to the baby, if early use of sign language is desired- for the words
you are trying to teach, by using sign with each other in front of the baby, they also need to spend some time in actual instruction.

TESTIMONIALS: "Amazing! Parents can build a bridge of communication with infants as young as
6 months old!" - OPRAH WINFREY. "Long before they can talk,
babies can communicate in symbols and gestures." - Jane Pauley, Dateline NBC. "An astonishing tool for parents. An amazing new world of communication." -ABC's 20/20.
"DOES
BABY SIGN ACTUALLY CAUSE VERBAL DELAY IN MANY CHILDREN? The short answer is NO, according to Dr. Lynn Mowbray
Wegner, a pediatrician in Chapel Hill, NC and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics. In fact, signing is a
very good... err... sign. It means that your niece is communicating effectively." Why do parents think that sign
delays speech? "Part of the problem may be that you think your niece should be speaking by now... In my experience
I've seen a huge individual variation in the rate of vocabulary and language develop in general... Late or early speaking
says nothing about the child's future capabilities or brillance," says psychologist Vikram Jaswal, Director of the Child
Learning and Language Laboratory at the University of Virginia. And actually... "Talking and signing together
flood the baby with language," says Acredolo whose research, published in the Joural of Nonverbal Behavior, indicates
signing may even give children a slight future verbal edge. "At 36 months, the (signing) babies in our study were speaking
on average, the equivalent of non-signing 47 month olds!"

In
the medical field, Baby Sign is highly recommended for infants, toddlers and children with developmental delays and speech
difficulties due to physical disabilities other than hearing impairmentby speech and occupational therapists. Infants with speech difficulties due to physical disabilities will often
have the mental ability necessary for language development and are only hampered by skeletal, muscular, or other limiting
problems, such as hypertonia common in many disorders. Baby Sign Classes allows those babies to express themselves despite
their disabilities.
I encourage
all parents of well, preterm and babies with disabilities to take a baby sign class at any age from birth on. General benefits
are it will enable pre-verbal children to communicate their wants and needs, accelerates communication and results in earlier
verbal language, enhances receptive and expressive vocabulary, reduces frustration, enhances receptive and expressive vocabulary,
makes learning to read easier, enhances creative ability, and results in a higher IQ by 10-12 points! By the time your child is 18-35 months he or she can sign 2-4 word sentences and thus communicate with you with
less frustration. Studies suggest that hearing children who sign as infants go on to develop particularly rich spoken vocabularies,
as well as a tendency to solve problems through communication rather than tantrums. They
may also teach sign to younger siblings after they themselves have switched to speaking with their parents!
